Spectator Sports

To say football, baseball, and ice hockey are spectator sports here is something of a misnomer. Western Pennsylvania residents are deeply emotional about their sports teams. The roots of this love affair stem from the hard-working coal miners and steel mill laborers who turned to sports as their recreation and relaxation after a long week.

    Founded by Arthur Joseph Rooney in 1933, the Pittsburgh Steelers have brought home 5 Super Bowl Championships to the Steel City.

    Founded in 1967, the Pittsburgh Penguins' team name was inspired by the arena they would play in, nicknamed the "Igloo."
